Nowadays, "education" is no longer confined to in-person, school-based settings; instead, it has gradually evolved into a multi-channel, multi-modal approach to lifelong learning. With the rapid and diverse development of online education, ABC Education is in urgent need to adapt and enhance its existing formats and content to better support lifelong learning across a broader age demographic.

The project’s initial goal was to broaden ABC Education’s scope to include lifelong learners, expand beyond the original target audience while incorporating strategies like micro-learning and serotonin resets to boost engagement and retention. To refine this objective, the project focused on understanding the needs and challenges of lifelong learners, particularly those in need of developing soft skills such as communication, teamwork, time management, problem-solving, and leadership.

Beginned with a clarified definition of lifelong learning — learning beyond traditional institutions to meet evolving personal goals — research revealed that the current platform primarily serves school-aged students, lacking the depth needed for continuous, broader learning. This project aims to expand the platform, building on ABC Education’s foundation with resources to engage users at all stages of lifelong learning, tailored to a multi-generational audience.

Double-Diamond Design Model and user-centered approach were used in the design process.

To better support lifelong learners, we applied key methods and tools across each stage, from problem discovery to solution delivery, iterating and optimizing based on user feedback.

Stakeholder mapping was used to Identify potential lifelong learners within ABC Education’s user base, helping focus on target demographics.

Comparative market analysis highlighted gaps in practice-oriented learning platforms, establishing a unique market positioning.

Academic research provided data-driven insights into user behavior and educational trends in Australia, ensuring relevance and strategic alignment.

User research was conducted through semi-structured interviews and online ethnography to gain in-depth understanding of user needs.

Affinity diagramming was used to organize user feedback into insights, supporting a user-centered design approach.

Interactive Content Delivery Method

Observations from Research Phase

Key Decisions

ABC’s adult users - teachers, schools, and parents

Rapid growth of online learning method

ABC currently offers fragmented and uncategorized soft skill related contents

ABC has limited content delivery methods

Users need to constantly learn new skills to stay competitive

Users generally conduct microlearning during commute or work breaks

Users prefer to learn from experts, mentors and exercise with real-time feedback

Users need motivation on lifelong learning through real-life problem solving and practicing

Feedback from 1st User Test

Feedback from 2nd User Test

Phase 02

Two User personas were developed to represent typical users, clarify their needs, learning goals, and obstacles, help supporting personalized content delivery and micro-learning modes.

User journey map was illustrated to show typical learning path on the platform, from content search to participation and feedback, help mapping the user’s entire learning experience.

Both tools provided insights into users’ daily workflows and learning patterns, enabling more targeted and effective design decisions.

“DEFINE” Ideation Phase

Phase 04

In this phase, we developed detailed High-fidelity prototypes in Figma that showcase all functions and interactions for a complete evaluation of design functionality and aesthetics.

This detailed representation facilitates a comprehensive evaluation of both the design's functionality and appearance, ensures a high-quality interaction experience and visual presentation for the product, simulates realistic user interface operations.

“DELIVER” Final Deliver Phase

Wireframes and low-fidelity prototypes were developed on Figma to define product logic, serving as the foundation for iterative improvements.

Mid-fidelity prototypes were further created as interactive representations that simulate user experiences a bit more realistically, allowing for practical user testing.

Two rounds of usability testing and System Usability Scale (SUS) were conducted to observe user interactions, gather feedback, and evaluate interface and functionality.

After collecting data on layout, practicality, and accessibility, we applied user feedback analysis to inform and guide further design iterations.

“DEVELOP” Prototype Phase

Phase 03

The suggestions reflect a need for better guidance, simplified navigation, and clearer visual and textual organisation. Users appreciate the AI features and interactivity but seek improved usability, with less complexity and more intuitive functionality. The overall design is good, but some specific areas (visuals, text density, interaction flow) need refinement for a smoother experience.

The feedback gained from users reflect a positive attitude towards the product and a strong interest in using the functions. The overall experience is relatively clear and logical, however, users also carried out the details for refinement, such as improved clarity and guidance in the AI chat feature, along with enhanced visibility of the search bar and streamlined navigation for course discovery. Additional suggestions include reducing distractions during commenting and optimizing text display for better readability.

Hi-fidelity Prototyping

The project has elevated the overall integrity, depth, and breadth of user experience design, as well as its connection to the real world, marking my transition from purely student work to practical product design. Over the three-month process, my team and I faced and overcame numerous challenges, resulting in a sense of accomplishment that I had not experienced in previous projects, despite acknowledging some imperfections in the final design.

The first challenge involved extensive communication with the client to understand their genuine needs. As our project have evolved from a simple academic assignment to a practical initiative, to achieve a balance between client demands and our primary design direction became a crucial task. Initially, our design was diverged from ABC Education’s core content, led towards an independent project. To solve this issue, we adjusted our educational content and visual style to align more closely with the existing product, ensure the consistency. The second challenge is to seriously consider the product’s feasibility and interaction fluidity. In a competitive environment with diverse online learning platforms, to attract potential users through our product's content and usability became the primary focus. After thorough market research, competitive analysis and user studies, we prioritized personalized learning paths and incorporated emerging technologies such as AI assistants. Two rounds of user testing yielded positive feedback, highlighted the product's engaging and user-friendly nature.

This project has also provided deeper understandings into professional workflows and management. Our team utilized ClickUp for progress monitoring, task assignment and weekly meeting planning, incorporated Q&A sessions each week to ensure all team members understood the design and participated actively. During collaboration, we encountered issues but addressed them promptly. Substitute meetings were arranged for temporary conflicts; a smaller 2-person subgroup was emplyed to efficiently arrange tasks. Although team members occasionally faced unfamiliar content, we effectively leveraged each member's strengths to complete the project.

During our final presentation to the client, we identified certain shortcomings in our design, such as the question on effectiveness of the comment function in interactive video in promoting collaborative learning, and the need of developing the profile function to further connect the design solution to the ABC product series. These insights allowed us to critically evaluate our work from an external perspective and prompted a reflective review to enhance future projects. Should we have the opportunity to refine this project further, we aim to improve the comment function to foster collaborative learning and develop user profiles that link the current project with other ABC products, further provide users with a comprehensive, multimedia learning experience.

Research skills, articularly academic research skills were significantly enhanced through continuous and in-depth resource investigation.

Regular team meetings and weekly workload coordination have strengthened both a sense of responsibility and overall work efficiency.

Multiple rounds of user testing have enhanced my skills in effectively communicating with and guiding participants, beneficial for gather more accurate feedback.

Engaged in high-fidelity prototyping has encouraged me to learn Figma tools such as components, provided an excellent opportunity to practice and refine my skills for future projects.
